It was certainly a season to forget for Andre Onana, who joined Manchester United last summer. Manchester United registered their lowest-ever finish — eighth place — in the Premier League this season, their worst since England’s top flight was reshaped in 1992. In the Premier League, the Cameroon shot-stopper has conceded 58 goals this season. Manchester United conceded 84 goals across all competitions this season. Onana, who was brought to Old Trafford by Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, recently spoke about the Dutchman.
“I don’t see any difference [in the way Ten Hag manages Manchester United in comparison to Ajax]. I think he’s the same guy. Listen, we are the same guys, we are the same players, he is the same manager that I knew in Ajax, and he will not change in one or two years. I am not here to back him, because he’s big enough [to back himself]. Last season, it was fantastic for him. So it’s just a bad season,” Onana told Manchester United legend Gary Neville on The Overlap, as per Sport Bible.
“So for me, last season I was the best, so for this season, we have a different goalkeeper? No, it’s the same guy. He’s just facing difficult situations. We are big enough to accept the reality because if we want to make things well, we have to accept the reality and we have to go [on the] front foot. So, I think he’s the same manager. He’s just facing different, difficult situations and hopefully, things become good for him,” he added.
Onana managed to keep nine clean sheets in the Premier League this season. He joined Manchester United from Inter Milan last summer for £47.2 million. In their last match, Manchester United got the better of Brighton in an away Premier League fixture by two goals to nil. Manchester United will next take on city-rivals Manchester City in the final of the FA Cup scheduled to be played on Saturday, May 25.
