Charlotte FC’s Brecht Dejaegere reportedly claimed that Lionel Messi was not happy during his stay at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). When Messi was part of the French outfit, Dejaegere used to play for Toulouse FC in the Ligue 1. The duo once again faced each other last year during a Major Lague Soccer (MLS) fixture between Inter Miami and Charlotte FC. After the game, Messi had a personal interaction with Dejaegere, who enquired about the difference between his experience in the US and France. That is when the Argentine legend labelled his two-season spell with PSG as “s***”, according to a report by the Mirror.
“At the final whistle, I asked him if he felt better in Miami than in France. He was surprised, and I told him I’d played against him with Toulouse at the Parc des Princes. He didn’t remember me… but it was my childhood dream come true. Messi has always been my favourite player. It was a real thrill to meet him,” Brecht Dejaegere said (via Mirror).
As per the Brecht Dejaegere, Lionel Messi was left disappointed, having failed to win the Champions League with PSG. Many fans of the French club kept their faith in Messi, who had won the European title during his time at Barcelona. As he was unable to replicate the success with PSG, the FIFA World Cup winner had faced severe backlash.
“He (Messi) told me that for him, PSG was ‘la merda’. Yes, s*** (bursts out laughing), because although the Parisians had been very welcoming at first, he had taken a dislike to them after the failure in the Champions League: he was getting whistled at every ball and he was fed up,” Brecht Dejaegere added.
Lionel Messi drew curtains on his illustrious career with Barcelona in 2021 and signed for PSG on a two-year deal. As part of the French side, Messi shared the pitch with his former teammate Neymar Jr, Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos and Kylian Mbappe.
Despite having a top-class and star-studded team, PSG could not fulfill their dream of securing the Champions League title. They had reached the Round of 16 in two consecutive seasons but failed to get past that level. Lionel Messi became the Ligue 1 winner twice and won the Trophee des Champions title with PSG. He switched to Inter Miami in 2023.
