New Delhi: Indian champions Dempo SC could have just two foreign players in their line-up when they face Al Sharjah of UAE in the crucial Asian Champions League play-off later this month as their Congolese striker Mboyo Iyomi is set to leave following a fresh groin injury.

The tall forward last played in the 1-0 victory over East Bengal in the first phase of the I-League and since then, has been out of action. Mboyo had a back problem and suffered a groin problem in training a few days back.

Speaking to Goal.com, Mboyo said, “The doctor has said that I need at least one and a half months rest. If we forced to play then, then the injury could worsen.”

The former Churchill Brothers player claimed that he had a meeting with his present club’s management regarding the injury.

“The coach knows about the situation. The Dempo management asked me what could be done. I suggested that since I am out for more than a month or so, I can leave for Congo. I might leave next week as the season is anyways over for me.”

Mboyo was disappointed that he wouldn’t be able to help Dempo’s cause in the prestigious Asian competition.

“I can’t play the Champions League. It’s disappointing but can’t be helped.”

Dempo skipper Climax Lawrence confirmed the same and stated, “I think he is set to leave for his country. This means that we would have only two foreign players in the Champions League game.”

The Goan side are currently placed fifth in the league ladder.
