A PhD student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has died by suicide in her hostel room. The 29-year-old student named Priyanka Jaiswal was doing PhD in chemical engineering at the institute. She was found hanging in her hostel room, reported Times of India. She was a native of Jharkhand’s Dumka and had joined the IIT around 20 days ago.
A police team from Kalyanpur rushed to the spot along with the forensic team. A fellow student informed the college authorities about Priyanka’s body hanging from the ceiling in the hostel room in the morning.
This is the third suicide case reported at IIT Kanpur in a month.
Last month, a 34-year-old research scholar at IIT Kanpur was found dead in her hostel room by housekeeping staff on Tuesday. She hung herself from the ceiling fan in her second-floor hostel room. Although the true reason for the death is unknown, the preliminary inquiry appears to suggest suicide, reported PTI. The scholar’s room was reportedly knocked on by the cleaning staff, who learned of her death when they got no answer. Police informed that the scholar was hanging from the ceiling when a cleaning staff member peeked inside her room.
The research scholar joined the IIT Kanpur to carry out her postdoctoral research and originally hails from Cuttack in Odisha. The scholar worked at the IIT Kanpur’s Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering as a postdoctoral researcher.
While on January 10, an MTech student of the institute was found hanging in his hostel room. The student identified as Vikas Kumar Meena was “under stress” for several days as he failed in his programme, police had said.
