It was organised by the Court of Master Sommeliers (CMSS) formed by the wine industry. In the last five decades, only 269 people in the whole world were able to crack this exam. Out of them, 172 people were from America. The purpose behind forming such an institution and conducting the Master Sommelier exam was to create such pairings for wine experts, whose demand is very high all over the world. Another practical exam is also conducted apart from the written exam. During the practical exam, candidates are given the task of blind testing the wine, where they have to tell what fruit is added. They also have to guess where this wine is from and how old it is.

It is necessary to pass the three stages, introductory, certified and advanced level to appear for the exam. All the three steps should be passed within three years and if the person concerned fails to pass in this period, then he will have to appear for the introductory level exam again.

There is one more thing that makes this exam special, that is, no candidate can give the last level paper on his own. For this, recommendation of well-known people of the wine industry is also required.
