Legendary India spinner Anil Kumble feels that England missed the trick by not using part-timer Joe Root on Day 1 against Yashasvi Jaiswal when he was smashing the spinners all around the park. Jaiswal looked in sublime touch on the opening day and scored an unbeaten 76 off 70 balls which included 9 fours and three sixes.
The English spin troika – Jack Leach, Rehan Ahmed and Tom Hartley failed to cause any trouble for Jaiswal as he displayed his own version of ‘Jazball’ to the visitors.
Leach was the only wicket-taker for England on Day 1 while the other two young spinners Hartley and Rehan turned out to be expensive by leaking runs at over 7 economy rate.
“I thought England missed a trick by not using Joe Root because he’s someone you can really turn the ball, and he has a good action. And there was Yashasvi Jaiswal, who is a left-hander, and we saw Ashwin trouble the left-handers. So England probably missed a trick,” Kumble said while speaking on Sports 18.
The spin great also criticised the English spinners’ length on the Hyderabad track as they failed to get the same turn as the Indians.
“I think it’s one, the length. I mean, they are not consistent at all on a surface where it’s assisting you a bit. We saw that with the Indian spinners. As soon as they bowled a good length, it was turning, so they got the lengths wrong. And then, when you want to spin, I mean first, is confidence. Hartley is playing his first game, Leach hasn’t really played in a while, and then he’s coming in,” he added.
Kumble further advised the English spinners to bowl the tight lines consistently to test the Indian batters.
“But if they have to come back in this game, the spinners need to be a lot more consistent. So maybe England need to just keep the field away a little bit because I thought they were over-attacks. Because yeah, I mean, you need a slip. Yes, you need a shot, but not for young spinners who are struggling to find the length,” Kumble said.
Riding on Jaiswal’s 70-ball blitz, India closed the opening day at 119 for 1 while replying to England’s first innings total of 246 all out.
