Former Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni put on an absolute show against the Mumbai Indians in yesterday’s IPL game. Playing at the Wankhede Stadium on April 14, the legendary wicketkeeper batter smashed a quick 20 in a mere four balls to help Chennai sail across the 200-run mark. His crucial innings included three consecutive sixes in the final over which broke out a loud cheer from the crowd. The entire sequence of Dhoni’s masterful innings has now been uploaded on X by a fan. His post reads, “5 mins of VINTAGE DHONI! MS Dhoni 20*(4). 3 consecutive sixes at Wankhede. Goosebumps”.

Yesterday’s crowd at the Wankhede grew impatient with every passing ball despite a brilliant innings from Shivam Dube. The penultimate over of the game was bowled by Jasprit Bumrah who conceded a mere seven runs, leaving Chennai at 180/3. In the final over, Daryl Mitchell mistimed one of his shots toward long-on leading to his wicket. Just then a loud roar was heard from the spectators as MS Dhoni walked down the stairs, away from the dressing room.

The Wankhede Stadium is the same venue where the legendary batter smashed the World Cup-winning six for India in 2011. The spot where the shot landed was between the Divecha Pavilion and MCA Pavilion which was immortalised with a memorial. That game MS Dhoni was facing Nuwan Kulasekara. This time the legendary skipper was against Hardik Pandya in the final over of the first half. His consecutive sixes helped Chennai add 20 more runs in the game, eventually leading to a victory.

The highly anticipated ‘El Clasico’ of the ongoing IPL 2024 season began with the Mumbai Indians winning the toss and electing to bowl first. Ajinkya Rahane and Rachin Ravindra opened the innings for the Chennai Super Kings. Rahane was dismissed early as the veteran batter departed at five runs in eight balls in only the second over. It was Shivam Dube and new skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad who rescued Chennai’s innings with both scoring more than 60 runs each. Following Dhoni’s finish in the dying stages of the first innings, Chennai amassed 206 runs at the loss of four wickets.

In the second half, Rohit Sharma spearheaded Mumbai Indians’ chase by scoring a century. However, the Hardik Pandya-led side kept losing wickets before running out of balls at a total of 186. This saw Chennai pick up the ‘El Clasico’ victory by 20 runs.
