After being out of action since the 2023 ODI World Cup, star India pacer, Mohammed Shami is back in the nets as he aims to make a comeback to playing competitive cricket.
The fast bowler had a stellar show in the ODI showpiece event as he became the fastest bowler to reach 50 wickets in the tournament’s history. However, following the tournament he has not been able to take part in any fixture be it the international games or the Indian Premier League.
The pacer had picked up an injury to his right heel for which he had to go under the knife and was under the watchful eyes of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He was eyeing a return in the South Africa Test series due to the medical team not clearing the quick bowler.

According to an earlier report by CricketNext, Jay Shah had revealed that the Indian fast-bowler is expected to return for the Bangladesh Tests that is slated to take place later this year and the away series against Australia as well.

However, under Gautam Gambhir, it is yet to be seen whether the newly appointed Head Coach will continue to rely on the services of the veteran pacer or provide opportunities to younger talents.
The likes of Arshdeep Singh have shown much promise in the T20I format but the Indian team could look to give him a run of opportunities in the 50-over and 5-day formats as well.

Meanwhile, Shami will look to get back to full fitness as he hopes to make a roaring comeback and possibly eye a spot in India’s Champions Trophy 2025, assuming the Indian team participates.
Considering his current fitness levels, Shami in all certainty will miss India’s upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka that is set to take place later this month. It is yet to be seen whether Gambhir will look on Shami as a lead pacer in the coming games following his recovery.
