Veteran South African cricketer Faf du Plessis has been out of the national cricketing set-up for quite a long time now. However, he keeps proving his caliber on the field in T20 leagues. Either he steps up with the bat or leaves the opponents and viewers stunned with his acrobatic acts.
He is currently leading the Joburg Super Kings in the second edition of the SA20. On Saturday, he pulled off a stunner against MI Cape Town to dismiss Dewald Brevis in the first innings of the game. The Super Kings couldn’t win the game but their captain’s astonishing catch has taken the internet by storm.
The incident occurred in the 17th over when Brevis sliced a length ball from Lizaad Williams. The ball went over mid-off while Du Plessis ran back and dived full length and plucked the ball from thin before landing on his back.
“What a blinder! That is unbelievable! From the King of Joburg,” said the commentator on air.
MICT batters had a blast on Saturday as they closed their innings on 243/5, just 11 runs short of Durban Super Giants’ all-time high of 254/4 against the Pretoria Capitals last season. Opener Rassie van de Dussen smashed 104 off 50 balls, with the help of 6 sixes and 9 boundaries while his partner Ryan Rickelton smoked 98 off 49, including 8 sixes and 6 fours.
In reply, JSK folded for 145 with only Leus du Plooy (48) and Romario Shepherd (38) making any impression on the scoreboard as MI Cape Town claimed their first win of Season 2 by a mammoth 98 runs.
“First game of the competition, at one stage it felt we would be chasing 300 but towards our credit, there was some better bowling at the end. Always under pressure chasing such a target and there were a lot of dismissals as well. In a chase like that, you need things to happen for you and when you lose four wickets in the powerplay, the game is done. We thought it would grip and hence picked more spinners, took us by surprise but now we know what to expect. Linde bowled really well, he is taller and got that drift,” said losing skipper Du Plessis.
