Shubman Gill was on fire for India in the second innings of the ongoing first Test against Bangladesh. In a match that is taking place at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, the right-handed batter came out to bat at No. 3 for the Rohit Sharma-led side and remained unbeaten on 119 runs from 176 balls. During his stay at the crease on Saturday (September 21), he hammered 10 fours and 4 sixes to help India post a total of 287 runs for the loss of four wickets.
Gill, who failed to open his account in the first innings, added 167 runs for the fourth wicket with Rishabh Pant, who also scored a century for the Indian team in his first Test since December 2022.
Gill completed his century with a single on the fourth ball of the 60th over, which was bowled by Mehidy Hasan Miraz. After he crossed the triple-digit mark on the 161st ball, he celebrated his fifth century in style.
Shubman’s father, Lakhwinder Singh, who was present at the stadium to watch his son play, was also seen celebrating the special moment. A video of him clapping and giving a standing ovation to Shubman is now going viral on the internet.

The century in the ongoing Test against Bangladesh is Gill’s second back-to-back Test century. In his last red-ball match for India as well, which was played against England at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, the 25-year-old right-handed batter scored a century for India and helped them win the match by an innings margin.
The century in the Chennai Test also helped Shubman break Virat Kohli’s record of four centuries in the WTC for India and take the No. 2 position. Gill, who made his Test debut for India against Australia in Melbourne on December 26, 2020, has five centuries to his name in 26 WTC matches played so far. The overall record of scoring most runs and centuries for India in WTC history is in the name of Rohit Sharma. The right-handed batter has scored a total of nine centuries in 33 matches played so far.
