'He is the Only Constant': Shubman Gill Pleased After Scoring Century in His Father's Presence

Shubman Gill was happy after scoring the much-needed century to silence the critics. Gill’s knock came under pressure with the batter not scoring the big runs despite an extended run of games. However, Gill’s happiness came when he was able to score the ton in his father’s presence.

Gill had mentioned his satisfaction with scoring the big runs in front of his father. He mentioned, “He comes for all my games in India. So he has seen me not scoring and scoring runs. He is the only constant whenever I am playing at home but yeah very satisfying to score runs in front of him.”

However, Shubman Gill also revealed that his father would not have been pleased with the way he got dismissed after scoring a century in the second innings of the second Test against England at Visakhapatnam. The batter was able to flourish despite being under pressure from the lack of runs from his as well as the lack of support he received in the middle on Day 3 of the Test.

After stumps were called on Day 3, Gill spoke to the commentators where he was asked by Ravi Shastri if he would get pulled up by his father for the shot that got him out. Gill revealed, “I think so. I’ll get to know once I get back to the hotel but I think so. He comes for most of my games, there’s no such pressure.”

Gill’s dismissal was also rather soft. The batter looked to go for the reverse sweep but was not able to nail the shot as the ball from Shoaib Bashir went on to nick the gloves which was then caught by the wicket-keeper Ben Foakes.

Gill himself had revealed that he had more to give in that innings. He said,” Definitely very pleased (with the knock) but I left a bit out there, to be honest.” He was unable to go further after scoring the ton with the soft dismissal, unlike Yashasvi Jaiswal who had managed to go on to score a double-century.

It was Shubman Gill’s century that drove India’s lead up to 398 runs along with a cameo by Axar Patel who scored 45, missing out on his half-century. But India has a chance to level the series but will have to bowl well with two days remaining and England intent on chasing down the target.  The match is set to be a closely fought affair with both sides in contention to walk away with the win.
