Mayank Yadav made his international debut for India on Sunday (October 6) in Gwalior during the first T20I of the ongoing three-match series against Bangladesh and picked up one wicket for 21 runs in his quota of four overs. The 22-year-old pacer, who earned place in the Indian team after making headlines in IPL 2024 for his express pace for LSG, touched the top speed of 149.9 kmph in the match. Former Pakistani batter Basit Ali, who has now donned the hat of an expert, was impressed by the right-arm fast bowler’s impressive debut and said the youngster instilled fear in the batter’s mind.
He wants the Indian selectors to consider him for a place in the Test team now after a dream debut in T20Is and include him in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy squad.
“It was a dream debut for Mayank Yadav. He started off with a maiden and even clocked 149.9 kmph. He has come from an injury, which is why his speeds have not been 157 or 158. Just imagine if he had been given the new ball instead of Hardik Pandya. He instilled fear. If you guys saw the match, batters did not play him on the front foot. I hope that he remains fit and goes to Australia,” Basit said on his YouTube channel.
The Indian men’s cricket team is set to travel to Australia later this year to take part in a five-match Test series. The 2024-25 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy will start on November 22 in Perth, and the next four matches are scheduled to take place in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney.
Basit was also full of praise for the Indian team’s superb performance in the first T20I against Bangladesh and said the 2024 T20 World Cup winners have changed cricket.
“India have changed cricket (with their dominance). Bangladesh is just an appetiser (for them),” said Basit.
India is playing without a lot of first-team stars in the ongoing three-match series, but despite that, it didn’t face any problem to humiliate Bangladesh in the first match and win by seven wickets.
“Yeh IPL eleven hai, India ki team nahi hai. There was no (Yashasvi) Jaiswal, no (Shubman) Gill, no Axar Patel, no Rishabh Pant, no (Shreyas) Iyer; (Ravi) Bishnoi did not play. And still they hammered them in just 11-something overs, finishing with a six from (Hardik) Pandya,” he added.
