BCCI secretary Jay Shah clarified that the decision to drop India players Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer from this year’s BCCI central contract was taken by the chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, adding that his role as the convener was to implement the decision taken.
BCCI had terminated the central contracts [Annual Player Contracts for Team India Senior Men for the 2023-24 season – October 1st, 2023 to September 30th, 2024] of Kishan and Shreyas Iyer in February in the wake of Shah cracking the whip on players skipping domestic cricket.

Kishan last appeared in a T20I for India in November 2023 before taking a break from cricket and skipping the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 season. Iyer, on the other hand, was a regular fixture across formats and played in the first two Tests of the England series before being dropped. He didn’t play in Mumbai’s quarterfinal clash against Baroda as they qualified for the semi-finals. He eventually turned up for Mumbai in the Ranji semifinal and the final.
“That decision lies with Ajit Agarkar, even when these two players (Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer) who did not play domestic (cricket), the decision to drop them (from the central contracts list) was only his. My role is just to implement. And we have got new players (in place), like Sanju (Samson). Nobody is indispensable,” Shah said.
Shah also revealed that he spoke to both the players after their exclusion. “Yes, I had spoken with them. Media had even carried the reports,” he said.
