India will face New Zealand in a three-match Test series. The series opener is scheduled to take place at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru from Wednesday (October 16), and the next two matches will be played at MCA Stadium in Pune and Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After whitewashing Bangladesh in the two-match series, India would like to repeat the same show against the Black Caps and consolidate its No. 1 position in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 points table.
During the three-match series against New Zealand, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma will have a chance to create many records both as a batter and as captain.
Here’s a look at five records Rohit Sharma can break during the India-New Zealand Test series:
Most sixes for India in Tests: Rohit has hammered 87 sixes in 61 Tests played for the Indian men’s cricket team. The right-handed batter needs five more sixes to break Virender Sehwag’s record and become the leading six-hitter for India in Test cricket. During his playing days, Sehwag smacked 91 sixes in 104 matches.
1st Indian to score 1000 runs in two WTC cycles: Rohit has 742 runs to his name in 11 matches played so far in WTC 2023-25. If he manages to score at least 258 runs more in the Test series against New Zealand, he will become the first Indian cricketer to score 1000 runs in two WTC cycles. In the 2019-21 edition of WTC, Rohit amassed a total of 1094 runs in 12 matches for the Indian team.
Most successful captain for India in WTC: Rohit has won 12 out of 18 matches played so far as Indian captain in WTC. If he manages to win all three Tests against New Zealand, then he will break Virat Kohli’s record and become India’s most successful captain in the WTC history. Virat led India in 22 WTC matches from 2019 to 2022 and won 14 of them.
4th most successful captain for India in Tests: India has won 12 out of 18 Tests played so far under Rohit’s leadership. If the 37-year-old leads India to three wins in three matches against New Zealand, then he will break Mohammad Azharuddin’s record and become India’s fourth-most successful captain in Tests. Azhar, who led India in 47 Tests from 1990 to 1997, won 14 times.
4th most successful Indian captain: Rohit will break Sourav Ganguly’s record and become India’s fourth most successful captain in international cricket if India manages to whitewash the Kiwis in the three-match Test series. Rohit has won 95 out of 128 matches played so far across formats. On the other hand, Ganguly finished his leadership career with 97 wins in 195 international matches.
Apart from these, Rohit will also become the first Indian batter to score 3000 runs in WTC if he manages to score at least 406 runs in the three Tests against Kiwis. As of now, he has 2594 runs to his name in 34 matches.
