Two years back, Thirubuvanam silk was recognised with a geographical code which added to the prestige of the Thanjavur district.

Silk sarees have always held a prominent position in Tamil culture and heritage for years. Arani silk sarees, Kanchipuram silk sarees and many more have their roots in Tamil culture. Thirubhuvanam sarees have a distinct identity among all of these. Thirubuvanam silk is more elaborate than the silks produced in other towns and can be easily identified in textile shops. Thirubuvanam is an ancient temple town famous for silk Weaving from the period of the Great rulers of Chola.

Two years back, Thirubuvanam Silk was recognised with a geographical code which added to the prestige of the Thanjavur district. Do you know about the number one production unit of silk sarees in the town of Thirubuvanam? It is called THICO Silks and is well known nationwide for its expertise in churning out some of the best silk sarees in the country.

The largest cooperative society in Tamil Nadu, Thirubuvanam Silk Handloom Weavers Co-operative (THICO) Production and Sale Society Ltd. creates traditional silk sarees with intricate motifs using pure zari. The Society is located in the Thirubuvanam Silk Weavers’ cluster, which is nine kilometres from Kumbakonam in Thanjavur. The society is functioning in its own building with sales outlets all over Tamil Nadu.

The co-operative society was started in 1955 and currently has around 1800 members doing business of up to Rs 465 crore per annum. These 1,800 members are provided with silk lace designs by THICO and these weavers weave their handlooms in the pattern specified by the company. The sizes of the given designs are monitored and payment is made for each pattern.

The sarees woven are then sent for sale to ten branches including in Thanjavur, Trichy, Madurai and Chennai. Co-optex, the colloquial term for the Tamil Nadu Handloom Weavers’ Cooperative Society, also ships sarees from here. While THICO Silks manufactures and sells, Co Optex has partnered with it for exporting and selling. There are many sorts of silk available here, ranging in price from Rs 10,000 to Rs 3 lakh.
