Tamil Nadu's Kaliamman Temple Decorated With Currency Notes During Puratasi Pongal Festival
According to the Tamil calendar, Puratasi Month is the sixth month and it carries great importance for Tamilians.

Tamil Nadu, a state with thousands of temples, has many diverse cultures and traditions. Every month the people of the state celebrate some festival. Recently, the Kaliamman temple in the Virudhunagar district celebrated the Puratasi Pongal festival which started two weeks back. It was celebrated with rituals like the Mulaipari Procession and the Sami Procession. The festival concluded on October 6.

One of the highlights of this festival was the grand decoration by the people. The Kaliamman god and the temple were garlanded with currency notes of 50 rupees, 100 rupees, 200 rupees and 500 rupees. Thousands of devotees flocked to the temple to worship Lord Venkateswara.

In a video by News18, it can be seen that Lord Venkateshwara is surrounded by long strips of currency notes while he wears the garlands of the same. According to the Tamil calendar, Puratasi Month is the sixth month and it carries great importance for Tamilians. It is considered the auspicious month and is dedicated to Lord Venkateswara.

The Puratasi Month 2023 is from September 18 to October 17. Special pujas and prayers are observed on Saturdays of this month to please Shani Bhagavan. Navaratri Festival and Ganesh Chaturthi are also held this month.

Special prayers were observed in Kaliamman Temple. The Mulaipari procession was also part of the ritual which took place during the Puratasi month of Pongal festival. During this procession, women devotees carry earthen pots or baskets on their heads which are filled with growing plants and nine different types of grains. They request the village goddess for rain and fertility of the land in order to secure a good harvest. The pots are called Mulaipari and the grains are called Navadhanyam.

In this month, special prayers are also offered at Srirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple in the Puratasi month.
