Nifty ends at 7123 ahead of poll results; midcaps drag
Midcaps, capital goods, metals and realty stocks fell prey to selling pressure. ONGC, Tata Power, GAIL, NTPC and Tata Steel are top gainers in the Sensex.

Mumbai: The market ended sluggish trading on an almost flat note in anticipation of a favourable election outcome. The Nifty ended at 7123.15, up 14.40 points or 0.20 percent while the Sensex was up 90.48 points or 0.38 per cent at 23905.60.

Midcaps, capital goods, metals and realty stocks fell prey to selling pressure. ONGC, Tata Power, GAIL, NTPC and Tata Steel are top gainers in the Sensex.

Among the losers are Bajaj Auto, Hindalco, Sesa Sterlite, ICICI Bank and Dr Reddy's Labs.

The rupee on Thursday gained 39 paise to close at a nearly 10-month high of 59.29 against the US dollar following sustained selling of the American currency by exporters and continued capital inflows, ahead of keenly-waited Lok Sabha poll results to be unveiled on Friday.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market, the domestic unit commenced strong at 59.50 a dollar from previous close of 59.68 and immediately touched a low of 59.62 on some hesitancy in local equities in morning deals.

Later, rupee bounced back to a high of 59.10 before settling at 59.29 - level not seen since July 26, 2013 when it had closed at 59.04. Today, the rupee rose 39 paise or 0.65 per cent over its Tuesday's close of 59.68. Forex markets were closed on Wednesday.

As per stock exchange data, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) pumped in a net Rs 934 crore in Indian stocks on Thursday.
