New Delhi: Infosys, often counted as one of the finest IT organisations to work for in the country has been rocked by the suicide of a young professional.
A 23-year-old trainee, Abhijeet Mukherjee hanged himself allegedly because he thought he wouldn’t meet Infy's high work standards and would therefore fail to be confirmed.
The dream job ended in death for this young professional who committed suicide on Tuesday. Reports say that he took the extreme step reportedly realizing he may not qualify the stringent performance assessment tests at his company.
A resident of Howrah, Abhijit had been undergoing training as a software engineer at the Infosys campus in Mysore.
In his suicide note Abhijit has allegedly said he could not cope with the pressure at work.
The victim’s mother, Chandrani Mukherjee recounted how he was under considerable stress even while undergoing training at the IT company.
“After each exam he used to call me and cry. His colleague once told me that they have forgotten to smile,” she said.
Abhijit had joined Infosys in February. He reportedly sank into depression after he failed two of the five tests he appeared for in the training period.
His family members have alleged that even after Abhijit's death, Infosys authorities failed to show compassion.
Abhijit’s aunt Mita Mukherjee said, “When his parents called up the company and enquired about the incident, they said we won't talk until you are present here. They gave us no information.”
Infosys Technologies, India's second largest IT bellwether had in fact sacked 2100 employees recently for non-performance and warned more firing could take place.
Infosys board member T V Mohandas Pai had earlier said, “There will be zero tolerance this year as far as workers are concerned.”
In fact, this is not the first suicide happening at the Infosys Mysore campus. In January this year a trainee from Jharkhand had hanged herself allegedly due to work pressure, although Infosys maintains the suicide was due to personal reasons.
The Indian IT industry employs about 2.2 million people. Recession has caused huge upheavals in the sector, forcing employer organisations to freeze pay hikes, make job cuts and even fire numerous personnel.
