New Delhi: The markets closed on an impressive note after spending most of the day near the flat line. Strength came in during the last one hour taking the markets higher breaching some important levels. The surge was seen despite some flat close in Asia and weak opening in Europe.
The Nifty breached 4200 mark and the Sensex breached 14,300 mark. Short covering was seen in oil & gas, FMCG and metal stocks. The Nifty Futures discount ended with 3 just 3 points. The mid caps also gained inline with the frontline indices.
Banking and financials gave a standout performance followed by oil & gas heavies like Reliance and ONGC. Capital goods was another space that was shining throughout.
The only index to end in red was BSE IT index, which was down over 1% on account of strength seen in the rupee value against the dollar.
New listings Decolight, HTMT ended in discount, yesterday's Glory Polyfilm also ended in red.
Sensex closed up 215.36 points or 1.53 per cent at 14295.5, and the Nifty up 67.20 points or 1.62 per cent at 4214.3.
About 1373 shares have advanced, 1128 shares declined, and 81 shares are unchanged. The BSE Midcap Index ended at 6,244.04 up 71 points or 1.2 per cent.
The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 7,357.75 up 41 points or 0.6 per cent. The BSE Bankex was up 2.7 per cent at 7,681.51. Bank of India, Kotak Mahindra, Canara Bank, SBI, Union Bank, PNB, ICICI Bank moved upwards.
The BSE Capital Goods Index was up 2.3 per cent at 11,358.06. Alstom Projects, Jyoti Structure, Punj Lloyd, SKF India, L&T closed higher.
The BSE Health Care Index was up 0.2 per cent at 3,781.22. Nicholas Piramal, Divis Labs, Matrix Lab, Sterling Bio, Dr Reddys Labs closed higher.
The BSE Auto Index closed at 4,697.47 up 1.4 per cent. Tata Motors, MICO, Bajaj Auto, Hero Honda, Mah and Mah surged. The BSE Metal Index closed at 10,611.59 up 1.8 per cent. JSW Steel, Tata Steel, Jindal Saw, Shree Precoated, Sterlite Ind advanced higher.
The BSE FMCG Index gained 0.8 per cent at 1,802.69. United Brewerie, United Spirits, Bata India, Tata Tea closed higher. BSE Oil and Gas Index closed higher at 7,645.59 up 2.9%. Reliance, ONGC, Reliance Petro, GAIL, Petronet LNG ended in green.
The BSE IT Index lost 1.2 per cent at 4,883.59. Patni Computer, I-Flex Solution, Infosys, Mphasis closed lower. The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 8333.3 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 37415.18 crore.
The BSE cash turnover was Rs 4589.46 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 50337.94 crore.
The markets have gained further momentum and have moved higher. The move has been unexpected and ferocious as well.
