Tesla's Autopilot Reduces Crashes by 50%, Says Elon Musk
Elon Musk expects that in the second generation of its Autopilot, incidents of crashes would go down even further.

Tesla had introduced a semi-autonomous Autopilot feature sometime back and bolstered with the data from the program, Tesla CEO Elon Musk is claiming that the feature can reduce the chances of an accident by half.

"The probability of having an accident is 50% lower if you have Autopilot on," Electrek quotes Musk. The Tesla CEO was speaking to Ketil Solvik-Olsen, the Norwegian minister of transport and communications.

According to Musk, the data is from the first generation of the company's Autopilot feature and he expects that in the second generation, in which cars could be fully autonomous, incidents of crashes would go down even further.

Tesla expects its fully autonomous system to be ready within the next two years.

While Musk claims that the Autopilot is "almost twice as good as a person," some questions are being asked. Tesla is defining accidents by airbag deployment, but not every accident triggers the airbag. Also Tesla's sample size is limited.
