Engine Made in Italy: Here's Why Newly-Launched Jawa 42 FJ Differs from Its Contemporaries
On the launch of the new Jawa 42 FJ motorcycle, Anand Mahindra emphasised that a brand is defined by its stories.

In a rare revival, the Jawa motorcycle brand, absent from the market for 44 years, has reignited interest among bike enthusiasts. Under the banner of Mahindra & Mahindra’s Classic Legends, Jawa re-emerged in 2016 and launched the Jawa 42 FJ on Tuesday, September 3. The brand’s storied return has generated significant excitement, positioning Classic Legends as a contender in the premium bike segment. Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra expressed confidence in overcoming challenges as the company strives to dominate the market.

Jawa 42 FJ Priced at Rs 1.99 Lakh

On the launch of the new Jawa 42 FJ motorcycle, Mahindra emphasised that a brand is defined by its stories. The new model is priced starting at Rs 1.99 lakh. “Brands are built from stories – why they were created, how they evolved, and how they continue to grow. Revived brands, like Jawa, also tell new stories,” Mahindra noted.

Jawa, originally manufactured in India from 1960, was a major success until production ceased in 1974. The brand was revived in October 2016 by Mahindra Group through its subsidiary, Classic Legends Private Limited. Since then, three models have been launched, with the Jawa 42 FJ marking the latest addition.

Anish Shah, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director of Mahindra Group, says that the company is in a good position at the second place in the premium motorcycle segment in the country and is eager to achieve the top position. He said that the Jawa 42 FJ motorcycle sets new limits for performance and price parameters. This bike is good in speed along with giving more mileage and its engine is also smaller and more powerful than its counterpart bike.

The engine of the Jawa bike launched in India has been made in Italy. Its design is completely similar to the old bike and an attempt has been made to keep the sound the same. However, in many ways it is different from its rival Royal Enfield’s bike Classic 350 and Hunter. Be it weight, mileage or speed, Jawa’s bike proves to be twenty times better than its rivals.

If we compare Jawa’s bike with Bullet’s Classic 350, it is heavier in many ways. Jawa’s bike has been launched with a 6 speed gearbox. It has a single cylinder, liquid cooled 293 cc engine with 27 horsepower and 28 Nm torque. In comparison, Royal Enfield Classic 360 has a 5 speed gearbox. Jawa’s weight is 170 kg and Classic 360’s is 192 kg. Being lighter, it will give more mileage. Apart from this, disc brake with ABS has also been provided in the rear wheel of the bike.
