WhatsApp Could Soon Allow Users To Privately Tag Contacts In Status Update
WhatsApp is currently working to develop a new feature that will let its users to tag contacts privately in their status updates.

WhatsApp consistently endeavours to enhance its platform by introducing new features to improve user experience. Whether it is introducing WhatsApp channels or making significant changes to video upload limits, the Meta-owned messaging service continues to roll out upgrades. In one such development, WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will allow users to privately tag contacts in their status updates, indicating the platform's ongoing commitment to innovation.

According to WaBetaInfo, the upcoming feature on the Meta-owned messaging app will function similarly to how users can mention friends or other users in their Instagram stories. Once available, WhatsApp users will be able to include specific contacts while creating a status update. To safeguard user privacy, these mentions will remain invisible to other viewers of the status. However, the tagged contacts will promptly receive a notification, informing them that they have been mentioned.

The upcoming update will allow users to directly mention and share important moments or updates with selected individuals. With private mentions, WhatsApp aims to enhance interactivity amongst its users, ensuring the content reaches the people they care about the most without overwhelming everyone’s status. Upon receiving the notifications, users can interact on the status update by replying or reacting to the post they are referenced in.

Presently, this new feature is under development and is likely to increase user interaction, making WhatsApp Statuses more interactive. WaBetaInfo recently spotted this feature in the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.6.19, and now WhatsApp is reportedly bringing this feature to its iOS application, according to India Today.

In addition to status mentions, the Meta-owned messaging app is developing a new lock function. This new feature will allow users to lock conversations on companion smartphones and create private mentions when sharing stories. According to reports by WaBetaInfo, these features are currently accessible on WhatsApp beta version 2.24.8.4, offering users improved protections for their conversations across all linked devices.

WhatsApp users will need to set up a private passcode on all companion devices that use the feature to ensure synchronisation with the primary device. Additionally, biometric authentication can also be added to secure locked chats on WhatsApp.
