Qualcomm is going after a big smartphone manufacturer that has a wide range of products under its lineup. The chip maker is legally suing Transsion Holdings in India for allegedly violating its patents.
The intriguing part about the lawsuit is that Transsion, which owns brands like Tecno, Infinix and iTel, does not even use Qualcomm’s chips for its devices. The report by The Financial Times earlier this month says that Qualcomm is suing this company for violating four non-standard essential patents.
Patent Battle In The News Again
Patent fights being fought publicly is hardly a surprise and we have seen Qualcomm engaging with other tech brands, even Apple for similar patent conflicts. The chip giant has been quoted saying that Transsion Holding, “declined to accept a license from Qualcomm for the majority of its mobile products, so it had no option but to pursue “litigation to enforce our rights”.
Qualcomm believes that suing the company is in its best interest and also protects its patent rights. But if the smartphone manufacturer is not using the QC chipsets then what is the point of suing the company? We’ll probably get the answers in the coming weeks.
What Happens Next
The same report quoted a spokesperson from Transsion who said, “respects the intellectual property rights of third parties” and added that the company is willing to reach an IP license agreement with patent holders through “friendly negotiations”.
The manufacturer has also talked about signing a 5G standard patent license agreement with Qualcomm which should most likely end the legal quarrel and settle this matter once and for all.
