Google has consistently worked hard to introduce new features that enhance the overall user experience. This time, the tech giant has unveiled a new set of teen supervision features on YouTube and Family Link. Google has rolled out school time on Fitbit Ace LTE smartwatches for parents who are willing to set the right balance for the time spent on technology by their kids. As per Google’s latest blog post, the teen supervision features will arrive on Android phones and other devices in the form a new update later in the summer.
The upcoming parental control features are designed specifically to empower parents to use the school time feature who do not want their children distracted at school but still want to be able to get in touch in case of emergency.
Google’s forthcoming update enables parents to link their child’s personal device to a dedicated home screen with limited functionality during school hours to gain teens’ activity on YouTube. Parents can also schedule and select apps their children could use during school time in the parental controls app. This feature also gives parents the chance to allow calls or texts from specific contacts. Moreover, the school time feature can be turned on outside of class to focus or take a break from screens.
The company also mentioned that it has also introduced new safeguards that would limit the recommendations of videos with content that could be problematic, especially for teens, if viewed in repetition.
Additionally, Google’s new feature will introduce supervision capabilities for all age groups within the Family Link parental control portal. This enhancement will enable parents to oversee the apps, products, and activities their teenagers engage with, while also continuing to track their activity and set digital ground rules such as screen time restrictions or location sharing for their children.
In the blog post, Google said, “We are continuously investing in research and development to address the evolving needs of parents and children. By working closely with experts in child development, education, and technology, our goal is to help shape a future where technology continues to facilitate learning and exploration.”
Google also stated that they will bring the ‘School time feature’ to even more devices, including select Android phones, tablets, and Samsung Galaxy Watches, over the next year to promote a productive learning environment.
