New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Varun Gandhi on Sunday asked the Centre to give him more security after the Delhi Police arrested six alleged gunmen employed by gangster Chhota Shakeel gang to kill the politician’s lawyers.
Varun, first-time MP from Pilibhit constituency in Uttar Pradesh, issued a statement in New Delhi in which he said “strong precautions” must be taken against “extremists”.
“The arrest of Chhota Shakeel's men exemplifies exactly the kind of terror and violence against which I stand and have been warning against,” said Varun, who faces several legal cases for allegedly making communal speeches in Pilibhit before the Lok Sabha elections.
“This is the second time in recent months that such a conspiracy has been uncovered. I am personally not intimidated by such cowardly threats,” he said.
Varun’s mother, Maneka Gandhi, has in a letter to the Prime Minister alleged that the Home Minister is not taking the “threats” to her son’s life seriously. “The Home Ministry has taken these threats very casually--it is as if you want Varun Gandhi to be killed," she said.
“The Home Minister told me he cannot protect everyone in this country,” said Maneka, BJP MP from Aonla in Uttar Pradesh.
BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad urged the Government to take Varun's security demands seriously.
Varun Gandhi is entitled to Y category security as a Member of Parliament. This entitles him 24-hour security, with a head constable and three constables posted at his house. But in fact Varun has Z-category security cover, which includes a pilot and escort vehicle, four personal security officers and a house guard.
The Special Cell of the Delhi Police on Saturday evening arrested six persons, who the allege were in the national capital to murder a lawyer of Varun.
Varun has employed several lawyers to fight the charges filed against him by the Uttar Pradesh government for alleged communal speeches and inciting violence.
