UP: Laptops for students soak in water after rain in Lakhimpur
Officials in Lakhimpur say the laptop distribution will take time as several machines are no longer in working condition.

New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's free laptop distribution scheme for intermediate pass students as promised in the manifesto during assembly elections in 2012 has hit a roadblock in Lakhimpur. A programme was organised to distribute laptops in Lakhimpur on Wednesday. However, the heavy rains on Tuesday night led to the laptops kept in a government building getting drenched.

Several laptops have been ruined and stopped working after getting drenched. The authorities have now locked the building. Officials in Lakhimpur say the laptop distribution will take time as several machines are no longer in working condition.

According to officials a total of 13,353 students studying in government, aided and unaided institutions are eligible for laptops in Lakhimpur. A total of 6038 students study in government and aided colleges. While laptops for these students have arrived, there is no news of machines for students in unaided colleges.

The laptops for government and aided college student were sent to Lakhimpur almost a month ago. But they are yet to be distributed. Sources say that the quality of the laptops is yet to be checked.

The SMDs, tehsildars and college principals have been given the responsibility of checking the laptops. At least five per cent of the machines are to be checked, but that is yet to be done.
