Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi is the latest to join the chorus for special status for Andhra Pradesh. In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rahul has demanded a special status category for the state. His letter comes ahead of Modi's upcoming visit to the state on October 22.
YSR Congress has already raked up the issue and sought an appointment with the PM on the issue. YSR Congress President YS Jagan Mohan Reddy had taken up an indefinite fast in support of his demand for special status to Andhra Pradesh.
He had asked Chief Minister N Chadrababu Naidu to exert pressure on the Centre to fulfil the demand and withdraw his party's support to the Modi government if no positive announcement is made in this regard.
The YSR Congress chief has maintained that special status tag was necessary for Andhra Pradesh to make rapid progress in all fields. The Central Government provides financial and other incentives to states enjoying the special status.
