New Delhi: Although the Election Commission is yet to announce the dates for the 403-member Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav on Friday said that they could be announced by February 20.
"It is the fear of the judiciary that foiled attempts to dismiss the state government and now political parties are deliberating over (Uttar Pradesh) going to polls which could be announced by February 20," PTI quoted Mulayam as saying.
He added, "Though Parliament has the right to formulate new laws and amend the existing ones, it cannot change the basic ethos of the Constitution. Due to this dismissal of a government on the report of a Governor is not easy."
However, ahead of the crucial Assembly polls, Mulayam isn't a happy man. He alleges that the political parties in the state had "ganged up to uproot" his government.
The ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) has 143 seats in the House, and was able to prove its majority when it took a vote of confidence in January.
