Nobody has the right to decide who will eat what, says Shiv Sena's Raut on meat ban
The Mumbai civic body has banned meat on September 10, 13, 17 and 18 during the Jain fasting period called Paryushan.

Following the ban on mutton by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which is ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Sanjay Raut of the Shiv Sena has said that "nobody has the right to decide who will eat what".

Claiming that "85 per cent of people in India are non vegetarians", the Shiv Sena leader said that those who are professionally involved in it won't have anything to eat in evening as they won't have any living.

The Mumbai civic body has banned meat for four days on September 10, 13, 17 and 18 during the Jain fasting period called Paryushan.

BMC slaughter houses will be shut for these days and sale will be prohibited. BMC Officials say the 4 day ban has been at place for past 10 years.

The move comes after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled Mira-Bhayander municipal corporation similarly banned meat sales for 8 days during the Jain fasting period.

The decision was taken through a resolution passed by the general body of the corporation on Friday to ban the sale of meat and closure of abattoirs during 'Paryushan' - fasting observed by the Jain community - from September 11- 8.

The resolution was moved by BJP corporator Dinesh Jain, in which the BJP got 29 votes in favour of the resolution, while the ruling party's ally Shiv Sena voted against it, along with the Congress and NCP.

As per the resolution, slaughter of animals will not be allowed under the Mira Bhayander limits between September 11 and 28.
