New Delhi: Senior National Democratic Alliance ministers on Thursday huddled together to chalk out a strategy for pushing the government's legislative business in the Monsoon Session beginning next week, as opposition parties closed ranks against it on various issues like the Vyapam scam, Lalit Modi controversy and the Socio Economic and Caste Census.
During the review, it was found that reports of Department Related Standing Committees in respect of seven bills are yet to be received while necessary approvals have been obtained in respect of nine others. Sixteen bills have been submitted for Cabinet approval.
Chairing the meeting, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu took stock of the agenda for the three-week long Monsoon Session.
Naidu urged the concerned ministries to expedite action in this regard so as to be ready for introduction and consideration and passing in the upcoming session.
The meeting was attended by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Law & Justice Minister Sadananda Gowda, Minorities Welfare Minister Najma Heptullah, and Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan, besides Jual Oram (Tribal Affairs), Thawar Chand Gehlot (Social Justice and Empowerment, Sripad Yasso Naik (AYUSH), Mahesh Sharma (Tourism and Culture) and MoS for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.
Secretaries of 30 Ministries/Departments that have made legislative proposals also attended the review meeting, convened to prioritise the legislative agenda for the session.
In a meeting of secretaries of the Parliamentary Affairs Ministry and Legislative Department of the Law Ministry on July 9, the government had finalised 35 items of business for the Monsoon Session, which included nine bills pending in Rajya Sabha and four pending in Lok Sabha, besides introduction of 11 new bills.
The four bills pending in Lok Sabha include the contentious land bill but sources say it is unlikely to be taken up during this session as the Joint Committee of Parliament scrutinising the bill is unlikely to complete its proceedings on time.
The three other bills pending in the Lower House are the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Bill, 2014, Delhi High Court (Amendment) Bill, 2015 and The Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2014.
