Mayawati meets Governor, submits resignation
Mayawati's BSP has been routed in the Assembly elections winning just 80 seats in the 403-member House.

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati met Governor BL Joshi on Wednesday and submitted her resignation following the decimation of her party in the Assembly elections.

In another significant development, Mayawati's key aide and Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh decided to take premature retirement from March 9. His two-year extension was slated to end on March 31. Since Singh was not an Indian Administrative Service officer, he wasn't supposed to be given any other position.

Singh, who rose to the rank of the cabinet secretary of the state despite being a non-IAS officer, was considered close to Mayawati.

Meanwhile, the Samajwadi Party legislative board will meet on Wednesday to elect their leader. Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav is likely to nominate his son Akhilesh Yadav as the next Chief Minister of the state following his party's impressive victory in the Assembly elections the results of which were announced on Tuesday.

The Mulayam Singh Yadav-led party captured 224 seats in the 403-member Uttar Pradesh Assembly, routing the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress-Rashtriya Lok Dal Alliance. While the BSP came down to 80 from 206 seats that the party had won five years ago, the BJP and the Congress with 47 and 28 wins came in a distant third and fourth respectively.
