New Delhi: Political developments in Bangalore have so far gone on predictable lines, but if one is to go by the words emanating from different political quarters, everything unpredictable is happening at the corridors of power as the state has plunged into a constitutional crisis.
While Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy and his Cabinet demitted office on Monday by submitting their resignation to state Governor Rameshwar Thakur, the Gowda junior did a U-turn immediately thereafter and agreed to tender a letter of support to the BJP to enable it to form the government.
In fact, Kumaraswamy said this in as many words. But he seemed to be on an ego trip on this occasion due to resentment among its legislators about not honouring the power-sharing pact.
“I don't want to continue. I asked my MLAs to hand over support...,” Kumaraswamy said. He, however, remained evasive when asked whether the BJP did not come forward to form the government.
“I told my MLAs to hand over the letter of support if they want the government to continue. In this exercise, they can even ignore me,” Kumaraswamy told the press after tendering the resignation.
Irrespective of whether Kumaraswamy actually meant it or not, it was clear sooner than later that there are indeed two camps within the JD(S) on the issue of power transfer to the BJP.
JD(S) senior leader N Cheluvarayaswamy, who played the role of a mediator between both the parties, claimed that there were feelers from the BJP favouring the continuance of the JD(S)-BJP government and even suggestions emanated that Kumaraswamy should continue for another three months and hand over power later.
“The BJP leaders said they wanted to defeat the conspiracy of the Congress,” he said.
A source in JD(S), however, said its legislators had signed the letter of support for the BJP, but it could not be delivered to them as the saffron party high command was not showing interest to accept JD(S) support.
The BJP on Sunday withdrew support to the Kumaraswamy Government and demanded Governor Rameshwar Thakur to dismiss the government and impose Central rule in the state.
