Bareilly: Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid, while addressing a rally in Bareilly on Wednesday, defended himself on the Muslim sub-quota issue. Khurshid has promised that the Muslim sub-quota will be increased from 4.5 per cent to 9 per cent, if the Congress is voted to power in Uttar Pradesh.
"We had promised 4.5 quota in our manifesto that's why we implemented it. When we want to do something for the people, we should make our intentions clear," said Khurshid.
"I am not making any statements for getting more seats. That's not my intention," Khurshid said in his defence.
The Election Commission on Tuesday issued notice to union Law Minister Salman Khurshid on a complaint by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that he violated the model code of conduct by announcing 9 per cent sub-quota for Muslims if the party was voted to power in Uttar Pradesh.
The Election Commission has asked Khurshid to reply in writing by 5 pm on Thursday.
"I have received the notice. I will reply to it," said Khurshid.
Talking on the prospect of the Congress in UP polls, Khurshid said, "My understanding is that we are moving very fast in taking over the government in Uttar Pradesh. I look forward to very good news for the Congress party."
Talking on the Salman Rushdie visa controversy, Khurshid said, "Salman Rushdie should not be made an issue. The implications for legal rights that overseas Indians have they can practice. As for my knowledge, Salman Rushdie has not been given visa. Indian origin people do not need a visa. Two years back when it was decided that Indians will not need the visa, everyone welcomed it…the politicians welcomed it. How can they object to it now?"
