New Delhi: It’s likely to be another extravagant show of political sycophancy in Tamil Nadu.
As Chief Minister M Karunanidhi completes 50 years in the state Assembly, his party DMK is planning big celebrations to mark the journey of a politician who has never faced defeat in the hustings.
News agency PTI reports a high-level committee that will oversee the arrangements for the celebrations has been already constituted.
Headed by the state Finance Minister K Anbazhagan, the committee will extend invitation to President A P J Abdul Kalam, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, former prime minister V P Singh, CPI-M General Secretary Prakash Karat and CPI general secretary A B Bhardan to be part of the gala celebrations.
Kalam is likely to address the state Assembly and felicitate Karunanidhi on the floor of the house on “any day” between May 8 and 10 and the others leaders could address a public meeting on May 10.
The state is gearing up for the occasion with literary meets and seminars on Karunanidhi lined up for May 9, a press release from the committee said.
Karunanidhi made his debut in politics in 1957 and represented Kulithalai in Karur district in the Assembly.
He was reelected from Thanjavur in 1962, from Saidapet in 1967 and 1971 and from Anna Nagar in 1977 and 1980.
In 1983, he resigned from the state Assembly, urging the Centre to take steps to make Sri Lankan government to stop the “genocide of Tamils”, but was elected to the now defunct legislative council.
He did not contest the 1984 Assembly polls, but returned to the state Assembly from Chennai Harbour in 1989 and 1991.
He was the only DMK nominee to be returned to the state assembly in those polls. He later he resigned and contested the Chepuak seat in 1996, 2001 and 2006 polls.
