New Delhi: Joint Parliamentary Panel has sought one week extension for submitting a report on the contentious Land Acquisition Bill.
The panel was to submit the report on first day of monsoon session that is July 21. It has received 800 memorandums and 51 people have been heard by the panel.
But, it is yet to hear from the state governments. The panel has written to the state governments and has asked chief secretaries to submit their reports.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also called a meeting of the Governing Council of NITI Aayog, which comprises all chief ministers, on July 15 to discuss the controversial land bill and other issues like poverty, health and social sector schemes.
The government, which had promulgated the land ordinance thrice since December, 2014, agreed to refer the bill to the joint committee following stiff resistance from the opposition and some of its allies during the recently-concluded Parliament session.
