Goa Cong chief to quit following election debacle
The March 3 Goa election saw ruling Congress being decimated and reduced to single digit in the Assembly; while BJP-MGP alliance won a landslide victory.

Panaji: Goa Pradesh Congress Committee chief Subhash Shirodkar on Thursday announced his decision to step down owning responsibility for the party's worst-ever performance in the state Assembly polls.

Shirodkar, currently in Delhi with former Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, said he would quit on Friday.

"I have decided to resign owning the responsibility," he said, adding that he would submit the resignation to Congress high command. It is expected that he will tender the resignation to party president Sonia Gandhi on Friday.

The March 3 Goa election saw ruling Congress being decimated and reduced to single digit in the Assembly; while BJP-MGP alliance won a landslide victory. Congress could win only 9 seats in the 40-member house. Shirodkar himself lost from Shiroda constituency.

Shirodkar and Kamat are in the national capital to hand over a preliminary report on the party's performance. Many Congress leaders have attributed the debacle to "family raj" within Goa Congress.
