New Delhi: While her state battles drought, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister’s obsession with statues continues to drain the state exchequer.
In the supplementary Budget presented by the state on Monday, a sum of Rs 550 crore has been earmarked for some of Mayawati's “dream projects” that include statues and parks in the name of her mentor Kanshi Ram, father of Constitution B R Ambedkar, Ramabai and Mayawati herself.
This is when the state government has asked for Rs 250 crore from the Centre under the National Disaster Management Fund for drought relief.
The Assembly saw uproarious scenes on Monday morning, with the Opposition up in arms, raising slogans and displaying banners in the House against the allocation for statues.
Rs 1,500 crore has already been spent on several structures, including on her own statues.
Earlier, a two Judge bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice P Sathasivam, had refused to stop the installation of statues of Mayawati and other Dalit leaders in Noida.
Environmentalists are opposing the installation of statues of Mayawati, her political mentor Kanshi Ram and Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar on the Yamuna Riverbed near Sector 15A of Noida, alleging that the installation violates green laws.
Opposition parties in Uttar Pradesh alleged that the government is spending around Rs 2,000 crore for installing these statues across the state.
