Caught in the nuke: Congress presses Advani for clarity
Advani has now softened his stand on the Indo-US Nuclear Deal.

New Delhi: Charging the BJP with "conflicting" stands on the Indo-US nuclear deal, the Congress on Tuesday asked the saffron party's prime ministerial candidate LK Advani to come clean on his real stand on the issue.

AICC Spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan told mediapersons that the BJP had announced earlier that it would re-negotiate the civilian nuclear deal with the United States if it was voted to power.

The party had now softened its opposition to the deal with Advani himself saying that the NDA, if voted to power, would decide on the deal considering the fact that an agreement signed by an earlier government cannot be easily disregarded, she said.

"These exposed the conflicting stands of the party on an important issue like the nuclear deal," Jayanthi said.

''Mr Advani should come clean on the Party's stand on the issue if it is really committed to energy security," she added.

Advani told mediapersons in Bangalore on Tuesday that, "I take cognisance of the fact that the government is a continuing matter. A treaty (nuclear deal) signed by an earlier government cannot be easily disregarded. This fact will be borne in mind and the government will take a decision."

As the campaign came to an end for the second phase of the Lok Sabha polling, Jayanthi Natarajan ridiculed the BJP for not coming out so far with the promised common NDA agenda for governance.

"Are there further cracks in an already depleted NDA? Are the remaining NDA allies unwilling to agree on any common ground with the BJP, to the extent of being unable to release a common agenda?" she asked.

When a scribe wanted to know why the UPA had not released its manifesto, Jayanthi said the Congress had already declared that it would not have any national alliance. Moreover, the UPA was a coalition that came up after the 2004 elections. Since the UPA was not a pre-poll coalition, it would not be possible for it to come out with a manifesto.

But in the case of the BJP, she said, Advani had announced that the NDA would release its National Agenda for Governance that would represent the vision and plan of action for the BJP and the NDA.

There were also reports that the National Agenda for governance would be released on April 16.

"We have still not seen any concrete plan of action or goals from the BJP, though the country is now ready to go into the second phase of polling," she said.
