Thiruvananthapuram: Former Defence Minister and Congress working committee member AK Antony's son Anil K Antony has been appointed the convenor of the grand old party’s digital media cell in Kerala. His induction is likely to strengthen the party’s social media interventions.

KPCC president Mullappally Ramachandran announced the appointment in Delhi saying Anil has proved his worth in Gujarat and some other assembly elections so the party decided to give him new responsibility in Kerala ahead of the general election.

He will work under KPCC digital media cell chairman Shashi Tharoor.

Anil is the Vice President and a member of the board of trustees of Navoothan Foundation, a non-profit working in the field of healthcare and women empowerment. He has worked for many MNCs in the past, including Cisco Systems, Grant Thornton LLP, and Beceem Communications (A Silicon Valley based startup in wireless and 4G technologies later acquired by Broadcom Ltd), and was the co-founder of Torque Technology solutions, and Pythia Data Private Limited. He briefly headed ‘India Demo Day’, a startup fundraising platform of D-Labs, an incubator based out of the Indian School of Business.

He is a graduate of Stanford University, USA and College of Engineering, Trivandrum. In 2017, he was chosen as a delegate for the Government of Japan initiated ‘JENESYS2016’ Future Global Leaders' interaction held across 3 Japanese cities. His Op-Ed columns have appeared for national publication.

Anil tied up with his Faisal Patel, Congress leader Ahmed Patel’s son, to crowdsource relief items through social media campaigns when Kerala faced the worst floods in its history this year. He appeared in some party campaign platforms in Delhi earlier.

Anil's appointment came immediately after Shashi Tharoor submitted a report regarding strengthening digital interventions. The report also recommended social media code of conduct for the Congress workers in Kerala. Congress leaders and workers from the state are active in social media platforms and some of their remarks often create controversies.
