New Delhi: The move by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and some other parties to impeach Karnataka High Court Chief Justice P D Dinakaran gathered momentum on Friday with about 50 Rajya Sabha MPs supporting the action.
Rajya Sabha members from BJP, Left parties and Samajwadi Party among others, have reportedly signed for moving of an impeachment motion against Dinakaran.
The judge’s elevation as a judge of the Supreme Court has been stalled due to allegations of land grabbing against him.
BJP leaders, who refused to be identified, said the Opposition is likely to demand an impeachment motion in the coming week on the basis of the signatures.
As per Rajya Sabha rules, if 50 members sign on a demand for a motion it becomes the property of the House and action has to be taken.
Government has already sent back Dinakaran's file to the Supreme Court Collegium to reconsider its decision to elevate him.
Top jurists like F S Nariman have objected to Dinakaran's elevation, accusing him of judicial impropriety.
Law and Justice Minister M Veerappa Moily on Monday had told Parliament “as per existing procedure”, Chief Justice of India will take a decision on allegations against Dinakaran.
"We have been demanding a judicial commission and the Government has been talking about judicial reforms. There are lots of issues which the Congress party should address and they should come out with a meaningful proposal ." — CPI leader D Raja told CNN-IBN
