New Scam? Man's Post on People Going Door to Door For 'Kanyadaan Donations' Has Delhiites Perplexed
Man shares how he was asked to make a donation for 'kanyadaan'. Here is what happened next.

In what comes as bizarre news, an anonymous user took to Reddit and shared how he had a very uncanny encounter. Being living in Delhi for 3-4 years now, the man had moved to a rented house in South Delhi for the very first time. Suddenly, one day, his doorbell rang when he was not expecting anyone. On opening the door, there was a lady who asked for a donation for a very strange thing. The man wrote, “There is this lady who said “Namaste, mere bete ka shaadi hai aur isiliye mein ghar ghar jaake kanyadaan ke liye paise collect kr rahi hu.”

The man further explained how he felt dumbfounded. When she asked for money, he told her that there was no cash on him. This is when she insisted on sending the money through Paytm.

“I don’t have much in my account anyways so I wanted to show her exactly how much I had anyways but luckily there was some technical problem with UPI apps. So, I just showed her the technical issue pop-up,” he wrote.

Perplexed about the entire incident, the man asked people on Reddit if this really happens or was it just a scam.

Here is the viral post:

“In my experience this is not that uncommon. It is generally people rendering daily services (safai karamchari, sweepers, waste collectors, dhobi, electricians, plumbers, security, etc) that work in the RWA. They also generally give you a shadi invite. Sometimes they also have a sheet where you write your name and how much you have. This is just to ensure that everyone one-up’s the other. No shame in asking who they are,” commented a Reddit user. Another person wrote, “Our neighbour’s maid came to collect some as well, and when my mother gave what she could, the maid started demanding more “Shaadi ka ghar hai pata hai na suit saree ka kapda dena hota.”

“Some people do it, but it is more like a formality and only done with neighbors you have a good relationship with. You are supposed to give nominal contribution like ₹11 and such but again pride and ego makes people shell out more,” another person suggested.
