The Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced water for a day every week in different areas of Panvel city in Navi Mumbai. The day-long water cut will be implemented starting from Friday, December 8, and it’s expected to continue until June 15, 2024, according to a press release by the municipal corporation, Mumbai Live reported.
The water supply would remain suspended on any of the week days area wise except on Sundays. According to a Times of India report, the civic body is taking this step to maintain water levels at the Dehrang Dam, which supplies water to the city.
With effect from Friday, the PMC has decided to reduce the water intake from Dehrang dam to 10MLD (millions of litres per day). This is to keep the dam’s water stock level stable until June 15, 2024. As a result, the water supply deficit now stands between 7MLD to 8MLD and the civic body is implementing the water cut to meet this shortage.
The capacity of the Dehrang Dam is 3.5 million cubic metres. However, this is not enough to meet the water supply demand of Panvel city.
According to Mumbai Live, 16 MLD from Dehrang Dam, 11 MLD from Maharashtra Life Authority (MJP) and 5 MLD of water from Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) are supplied to Panvel. But, the city residents face water shortage due to supply crunch on Sundays and Mondays of the week. The residents of Panvel are also facing water shortage frequently due to technical repair works and other maintenance works from time to time.
The latest water cut by PMC until June 15, 2024, has been planned to avoid any incertainities of water shortage in the Dehrang Dam in the upcoming summer season, the Mumbai Live report added.
However, activists allege that the Dehrang dam has not been utilised to its full capacity and there is no excavation over the past 20 years to enhance its water stock volume. Reportedly, locals in the area are compelled to buy and use packaged water bottles supplied by companies and business outlets run by local politicians.
