New Delhi: Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam raised eyebrows on Monday morning with a series of tweets against the azaan call given by a mosque near his home, terming it “forced religiousness".
God bless everyone. I'm not a Muslim and I have to be woken up by the Azaan in the morning. When will this forced religiousness end in India— Sonu Nigam (@sonunigam) April 16, 2017
Questioning the use of loudspeakers for azaan, the singer wrote, "And by the way Mohammed did not have electricity when he made Islam... Why do I have to have this cacophony after Edison?"

Nigam even termed the practice as “gundagardi".
I don't believe in any temple or gurudwara using electricity To wake up people who don't follow the religion . Why then..? Honest? True?— Sonu Nigam (@sonunigam) April 17, 2017
Gundagardi hai bus...— Sonu Nigam (@sonunigam) April 17, 2017
Azaan is a call to prayer given five times a day by the muezzin of a mosque. The first call is given early in the morning.
Reacting to Sonu Nigam's tweet, Tehseen Poonawalla tweteed:
Yes Sonu Nigam ban everything that disturbs ppl . From Azaan to ghantis & jagrans to celebrations on roads. Come with me to @CMOMaharashtra— Tehseen Poonawalla (@tehseenp) April 17, 2017
Other Twitterati, too, were quick to react.
One user was waiting for Nigam to say his account was hacked.

Others demanded ban on loudspeakers for religious purposes.
Don't want to hear the Azaan at dawn, nor do I want to hear a Chikni Chameli tuned Ganesh Aarti at dusk. Ban ALL loudspeakering of religion. https://t.co/BVu1Nb6mKR— Apurva Asrani (@Apurvasrani) April 17, 2017
Kudos to you Sonu Nigam. & with that said, im against the use of loud speakers by gurudwaras & temples too, just as mosques.— Queen B (@_msfancypantss) April 17, 2017
One user reminded Nigam that jagratas was how he started his successful singing career.
Dear Sonu Nigam u forget u started ur career doing jagrata all night. Where was gundagardi thn. If azaan shd stop thn jagrata shd also stop.— G.MISHRA (@Satyameva_J) April 17, 2017
Nigam was also panned for the tweet.
@sonunigam I am a fan of urs but this was definitely a bullshit statement. U gotta respect other religions beliefs. It's a democratic country.— Madhur Chandna (@macchandna) April 17, 2017
Azaan should be stopped in India, where millions of Muslims live, because desh ka laadla Sonu Nigam can't sleep. Where is the tolerance? FO.— Sheru. (@iamzaalima) April 17, 2017
