Shailene Woodley, known for her roles in Big Little Lies and Three Women, is preparing to play American singer and songwriter Janis Joplin in her upcoming biopic. The actress recently revealed how she discovered a new talent for singing while aiming to do justice to the character. Shailene appeared on Live With Kelly and Mark when she opened up about her transformation into the iconic rockstar for the film that she is also producing.

Speaking about bringing out her singing talent to the forefront, Shailene Woodley stated, “I’m not like a trained singer, but I feel and I can sing in my shower. It turns out I can also sing outside of the shower, which I didn’t really know until I started working on the Janis project, and working with Linda Perry, who’s an amazing music producer and musician herself.” She noted that Linda Perry encouraged and helped her find her centre and own voice.

Furthermore, sharing details about the role, Shailene Woodley mentioned, “It’s been really exciting. It’s been over six years of putting it together. To me, it’s important to do these things with a lot of integrity and a lot of care. Janis is someone I’ve always deeply respected and admired, like the spirit in her, the soul she was on this planet and kind of the light that she was on this planet.” She added, “it’s been a really great adventure getting to know her more while searching for all of the creative pieces.”

On the other hand, Linda Perry told Entertainment Weekly that Shailene Woodley’s commitment and dedication to play Janis is “inspiring.” Linda added, “Shailene lives for the art and I can’t think of a better person to portray such a powerful, emotional, and complex artist.” The composer also noted she has been waiting for decades for this film to be made and has no words to express how honoured she was to be featured in this ‘raw and honest’ depiction of Janis Joplin’s final days.

Before she died in 1970, Janis Joplin rose to popularity as a renowned rock singer whose work defined a specific era in American pop culture. Her posthumous solo album Pearl was No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums list till 2 months after her death. Meanwhile, the premiere date and other details for Joplin’s biopic have yet to be disclosed.
