Pa Ranjith On Thangalaan Success: 'The Audience Is Appreciating The Magical Realism...' | Exclusive
Chiyaan Vikram’s latest film, Thangalaan, directed by Pa Ranjith, is set to release in Hindi on September 6.

Vikram’s highly anticipated film Thangalaan finally hit theatres worldwide on August 15. It is directed by Pa Ranjith and stars Malavika Mohanan, Parvathy Thiruvothu and Daniel Caltagirone in the lead roles. It is produced by KE Gnanavel Raja under the banner of Studio Green and Neelam Productions. In an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, Pa Ranjith opened up on the kind of reviews and reception the film has been on the receiving end of.

Pa. Ranjith said that he is happy with the appreciation the film is getting. “We got very good appreciation and people are enjoying the world and they connected with that world. A lot of discussions happened after the release – and continues till today – on the social media. It’s being appreciated not only in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh but other states also. It’s connecting the world.”

The filmmaker said that the audience has enjoyed the overall movie experience and not just the story. He added, “While watching, the audience will experience something new, as the movie introduces elements of magical realism, which is new in mainstream commercial cinema. Of course, some films have dealt in this before, we’ve brought it to a wider audience. A lot of discussions happened after the release.”

During the same chat, Vikram acknowledged that not many actors of his calibre and stature would take on a role like Thangalaan. So, what made him choose this project, we asked him. “Because nobody else would do it (laughs), and it begged to be made. The fact that a mainstream hero can look like this and do this excited me. That, in large part, is the USP of the film. Then, to have it made by someone as aesthetic as Ranjith, with his deep thoughts and revolutionary ideas, was very thought-provoking, and I felt I had to do it,” he explained.

Chiyaan Vikram’s latest film, Thangalaan, has already garnered significant buzz and is deemed a hit at the box office, based solely on its collections in the South. Directed by Pa Ranjith, the film is set to release in Hindi on September 6.
