The professional rivalry between two of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars, Thalapathy Vijay and Ajith Kumar is well known. The actors do share a cordial relation between them, their respective fanbases often indulge in squabbles. Some of their films have also clashed at the box office, the latest being last year’s Varisu and Thunivu. Both of them also started their careers around the same time in the mid 90s and have established themselves as reigning stars of Tamil cinema. Do you know that one of Ajith Kumar’s earliest films was initially offered to Vijay? We are going to tell you about it in detail.
Before Ajith Kumar established himself as a larger-than-life action hero with 1999’s Amarkalam, a persona he continues to play till date, he had a successful stint as a romantic hero in films like Kadhal Kottai, Kaadhal Mannan and Aval Varuvala. Kadhal Kottai was a major success that it was remade in various languages. It was remade in Hindi as Sirf Tum, in Kannada as Yaare Neenu Cheluve and in Bengali as Hothat Brishti.
Kadhal Kottai was directed by Agathiyan, who had directed Ajith Kumar in Vaanmathi earlier. For Kadhal Kottai, he wanted someone new and hence he reportedly approached Thalapathy Vijay’s father, filmmaker SA Chandrashekhar. He narrated the script of Kadhal Kottai to SA Chandrashekhar and asked for his son’s dates for the film. SA Chandrashekhar liked the script and requested Agathiyan to wait for 6 months for the first schedule, as Thalapathy Vijay had his hands full at the moment. Agathiyan could not keep this request as it would upset the dates locked by other actors. He chose to repeat the casting of Ajith Kumar for his next film as well.
Anju Aravind was the first choice for the lead actress, but declined due to her commitments to Arunachalam, resulting in Devayani being cast in the film.
