Vijay Varma recently opened up about his skin condition vitiligo, a disorder that causes patches of skin to lose their colour. According to NIH, vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune disease in which patches of skin lose pigment or colour. This happens when melanocytes – pigment-producing skin cells – are attacked and destroyed, causing the skin to take on a milky white colour. The actor recently revealed in an interview how he dealt with this condition in his acting career.
Speaking to the Times of India, the actor added that he doesn’t make a big deal out of it. “It’s just a cosmetic thing and it’s not something that can change the course of your life,” the Darlings actor said.
When asked if he had faced any setbacks in the industry in his 12-year-long career due to his skin condition, the actor admitted that his condition bothered him whenever he was unemployed. “I wondered if it would become a hindrance. But since I’m working and having a lot of success, it doesn’t bother me anymore,” Vijay Varma said.
Talking further about his condition and how he doesn’t keep it a secret, the 38-year-old actor said that he only covers his skin condition when he is on camera. “I don’t want my audience to see anything other than what I want to show them.”
However, he has never covered up his condition during public appearances. He said that people today are very intelligent and also have an innate sense of responsibility. He added that he has never been maligned for his skin condition. “Maybe if it was a different time, then maybe this could have become an issue.”
Vijay Varma collaborated with Anubhav Sinha for the director’s web series debut IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack. The Netflix drama also stars Pankaj Kapur, Naseeruddin Shah, Dia Mirza and Patralekhaa, among others.
