Of all industries that harm environment, fashion is probably the most understated one. From a raw fabric to a designer's visioned design - every stage in a garment's life cycle has the potential to threaten nature. After much discussion and debates, the concept of sustainable fashion is, at last, captivating the limelight in Indian fashion business.
The recently concluded Amazon India Fashion Week Autumn Winter'17 boasted varied shows promoting the ideology of environment-friendly fashion wherein Indian textiles and weaves were given a beguiling face-lift on the runway.
"Of course the need of the hour is sustainable fashion. I think the need of the hour should be sustainable everything," says veteran designer Tarun Tahiliani while speaking to News18.com.
He dreads the future of mankind if one continues to exploit the natural resources. "We know that we are living at the limits of what this planet can take in terms of the over-plundering of its resources, so I think we are way past the time unless we want to risk further dire consequences of unpredictable patterns of weather which result in crazy rainfall, drought, water shortages and food shortages at a very basic level before we get to anything else."
According to Tahiliani, sustainable fashion is not just making use of natural materials but also the promotion of quality fashion as opposed to disposable fashion. He highlights the fact that "billions of pieces are made and discarded every year for some silly fashion fantasies."
"The more we do this and stop making fashion something new that has to be discarded and reinvented every month, our approach will change to buying less with better quality and finesse would change," he says.
He further adds that sustainable fashion supports elegance. "It supports people dressing as they feel appropriate and dressing with dignity."
Couturier Amit Aggarwal advocates the need of a general awareness and tags sustainable fashion to be one of them. "An awareness towards the current environmental issues and individual & communal steps towards resolving those is the need of the hour and sustainable fashion is one of those things."
He's of the view that the industry needs more ideation in terms of different ways to be helpful towards the environment.
Aggarwal, who presented a collection weaved of pre-owned textiles, also credits Bollywood celebrities like Rahul Bose and Priyanka Chopra for pushing sustainable fashion into the mainstream business.
The movement towards sustainable fashion has been in the making for a while, according to ace designer Anju Modi.
"There have been many designers and members of the fraternity that have been contributing to better sustainability and a strong sense of social responsibility," she says.
When asked what initiatives could further strengthen the movement, she mentioned two basic steps in a hope for a better future. "The fabrications and fabric usage should be monitored and wastage minimized. Above that, using techniques that waste least resources and reducing the overall carbon footprint are basic efforts towards this goal."
