Holi is just around the corner and celebrating with much rang barse, this festivity is all about new beginnings. An ancient festival marking the change of season, today it is celebrated not just in India but across the world. People gather on the day by daubing each other with colours, songs and dance, and enjoying delectable sweets. And while we humans indulge in celebration, our furry companions often get left out of this enjoyable festivity. So, here are five delightful options to consider for your pet shared by Dr Deepak Saraswat, Head Vet, Zigly:

  1. Gujiya GourmetThe classic Holi sweet filed with Khoya and dry fruits, can be a treat for our taste buds but the amount of sugar and ghee content in Gujiya can cause digestive issue in dogs. Instead, try “Gujiya Pupcakes”; small size treats that looks similar as traditional gujiyas but are made with whole wheat flour, peanut butter, with a pea size honey. Giving a Gujiya like shape and decorating with yogurt with pet-safe food ingredients.
  2. Thandai Lick-a-lotA refreshing milk-based drink with packed nutrients. A Thandai with frozen nuts and seeds can be a frozen treat that’s not only delicious but also cooling on a hot Holi day. Simply blend plain yogurt with a hint of honey and saffron (which is considered as a pet safe spice). Pour the mixture into ice cube tray and let your pup lick away this fresh treat.
  3. Coconut powder barfiA rich and extravagance Holi sweet is a favourite among many, but the treat is high in sugar which can be problematic for your pet. But we can create a “Coconut Pawder” by blending unsweetened coconut, pouring a chick size amount of honey and coconut oil; then just roll the mixture into a bite-size balls and refrigerate. These treats are delicious as well as full of nutrition and healthy fats for your pet.
  4. Matar Paw-riA crispy fried snack made with green peas, can be a Holi favourite. We understand that deep frying process can be an unhealthy treat for your furry friends. Hence, transforming this treat into a healthier “Matar Paw-ri” by baking a small piece of whole wheat bread until crunchy, and topping it with a mixture of boiled green peas, grated carrots, and a sprinkle of low-sodium cheese. These bite-sized treats are not only tasty but also packed with nutrients that your pet will love.
  5. Mini-Muffin MalpuaMalpua, a crispy pancake drizzled in a sugar syrup which is a crowd pleasure for human being but not for our canine consumption. But we can transform this into a treat for your dog by using wheat flour as the base of these muffins instead of refined flour. This provides a good source of fiber and nutrients. Mashed pumpkin will further add natural sweetness and moisture, and a touch of unsweetened apple sauce will provide sweetness.

This Holi, include your furry friend in the celebrations with these reimagined traditional sweets. Remember to check for any allergies or sensitivities your pet may have before introducing these treats. With moderation and care, you can make this festive season a joyful and delicious experience for both you and your pawesome pal!
