Exploring the Rising Trend of Male Cosmetic Procedures in India
There has been a remarkable increase in men seeking cosmetic procedures in India, signaling a significant shift away from conventional notions of male grooming.

In recent years, India has witnessed a notable surge in men seeking cosmetic procedures, marking a significant departure from traditional perceptions of male grooming. Dr Aleena, a seasoned dermatologist from Mumbai, and Dr Kisalay Saurav, a prominent dermatologist from Bengaluru, share insights into this evolving trend, shedding light on its underlying factors and implications.

Question 1: Are more men getting cosmetic surgery done than before? Can you quantify it?

Dr Aleena, says, “Yes, there has been a notable increase in the number of men choosing to undergo cosmetic procedures compared to previous years. While the exact figures may vary, the growth in this area is quite significant.”

The men’s grooming and beauty industry has experienced a surge in popularity, resulting in a notable rise of up to 29% in men opting for cosmetic surgeries.

Dr Kisalay Saurav echoes the same sentiment, “Over the past decade, there has been a noticeable uptick in the number of men seeking cosmetic procedures in India. While precise quantification requires recent data from medical associations and clinics, anecdotal evidence and industry reports suggest a discernible increase.”

Question 2: What do you credit this trend to?

Dr Aleena shares, “This trend is due to increased awareness about skincare, the influence of social media, and changing societal norms that now accept grooming and cosmetic treatments for men. The shift reflects a broader acknowledgment of self-care and the importance of looking and feeling one’s best, contributing to the surge in men seeking cosmetic procedures.”

Dr Kisalay Saurav believes, the burgeoning interest in cosmetic procedures among Indian men can be attributed to a confluence of factors. “Changing societal norms have led to a more inclusive definition of beauty and self-care,” he adds.

Question 3: Earlier what services would men get and nowadays, what are the popular treatments among men?

Dr Aleena feels in recent years, there has been a notable change in men’s approach towards personal grooming. While in the past, their focus was mainly on basic grooming practices, today, there is a growing trend towards a more comprehensive self-care routine. “Men are now increasingly interested in advanced skincare techniques, such as utilizing products and treatments like Botox, fillers, hair and beard transplants and rhinoplasty,” opines Dr Aleena.

Dr Kisalay Saurav shares, “Traditionally, men in India sought treatments primarily focused on grooming, such as laser hair removal and acne scar reduction. However, contemporary trends indicate a diversification of preferences.”

Question 4: What is the price they are willing to spend?

Dr Aleena says, “Men have a wide range of options when it comes to investing in their skincare. They can choose from affordable skincare products to more expensive surgical procedures that can cost lakhs of rupees. Additionally, there are also non-surgical cosmetic procedures available for men to consider.”

Q: Can you describe the demographic?

Dr Aleena: The demographic is wide-ranging but prominently includes middle-aged professionals. With their increased financial stability and disposable income, they are more likely to invest in products and treatments that can help them achieve and maintain a youthful appearance.

Q: Do you feel that men are now facing pressures to look a certain way?

Dr Kisalay Saurav: The changing landscape of societal expectations and the influence of media have undeniably contributed to an increased consciousness about appearance among men in India.

Q: Any interesting data or anecdotes you can share with me?

A: Traditionally, this industry has primarily catered to female consumers, with women seeking various treatments to enhance their appearance and boost their self-confidence. However, a fascinating trend has emerged in the form of a growing number of male clients entering the market. It is predicted that by 2040, men will make up approximately 35% of the clientele in the aesthetic medicine industry.
